Timing from the NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission: inhaled cannabis is usually felt within 1 to 5 minutes and may last up to four hours; eaten cannabis is usually felt within 30 minutes to 2 hours and may last several hours or longer.
Flower
Dried cannabis buds, sold by weight (an “eighth” is about 3.5 grams). Flower labels show THC as a percentage, plus the strain name and its terpenes. It’s the most traditional format and gives you the widest choice of strains.
Pre-rolls
Flower that’s already ground and rolled, so there’s nothing to prepare. Sizes vary, and some packs hold several smaller pre-rolls. The label shows the weight and THC percentage, just like flower.
Vapes
A cartridge or disposable pen heats cannabis oil instead of burning plant material. Vapes are discreet and come in small, labeled amounts. Oil is usually much higher in THC by percentage than flower, so a little goes further. Only buy vapes from licensed dispensaries.
Edibles
Gummies, chocolates and other foods made with cannabis. They show THC in milligrams per serving and per package. Because they take much longer to kick in, edibles need the most patience. Read Edibles: start low and go slow before your first one.
Concentrates
Extracts such as wax, shatter, rosin and live resin. They’re far higher in THC than flower and usually need special equipment, so they’re generally not a starting point for first-timers.
Choosing a format
Think about timing, how much prep you want, and how you’d like to consume. Then compare THC on the labels. Our budtenders can show you lower-THC options in any format. Not sure where to start? Read the basics for first-timers.
